Designing concept or production cars is a fascinating process that very few people get to be part of or see. Together, teams of highly skilled and passionate designers and modellers create the aesthetics of a vehicle. This talk starts by providing a brief historical overview of automotive design before introducing the work of the different specialists that contribute to the design of a car. The talk moves on to look at how advances in technology are changing the design process. Technologies include: online collaborations. The talk ends by asking what the future may hold for automotive design.
Dr Aysar Ghassan is the Programme Director of the highly respected MA in Automotive & Transport Design at Coventry University. He has published his research widely in leading international journals and conferences. He also contributes to design magazines and websites, including The Road Rat, Form Trends, and Arts Thread. Aysar has written and presented a talk on automotive design for Radio 3’s ‘The Essay’ titled 'Postcards from Coventry, The Art of Cars'. In addition, Aysar runs 'Car Design Shorts', a space that uncovers the visual tricks that car designers use when they create concept and production cars.
